Main discussion

  1. Questions continued on from Last Week –
    1. Q: Can you talk about the different suits in Odyssey? – Yes, as you see in the video, players can take up different roles depending on the suit they use. The tactical suit for example, can carry two different weapons, which is unique to that suit, so you need to consider the best suit for the mission you’re about to engage in.
    2. Q: There are different types of weapons in Odyssey, could you tell us why a player might use them? – Way back when we started prototyping combat, it became quite clear to us early on that the ship combat has some really interesting concepts behind it, so we basically stole them! The premise is that kinetic weapons are good against armour, lasers are good against shields, and plasma re decent against both but not quite as good as the other two. When it comes to choosing a loadout, you’ll want to choose your weapons to be the most efficient, so you may want lasers to take out shields and kinetic to finish them off. If you’re working as a team, you can specialise, one player can be ant-shield, and another can finish them off via kinetic.
    3. Q: For the getaway, we landed to the side of the settlement for a quick escape, there’s been a small change in this, hasn’t there? – Yes, you can now automatically land on planet surfaces. It’s hard to encapsulate all the changes in a few minutes of video. When players get hold of the alpha, that’s when they’ll really understand what we’ve done.
    4. Q: Can you talk about suit management? – There are different things that can pull on the suits’ power. There’s the life support machine, things like the shield (which is power hungry when turned on), and some of the tools can use your suit power. Survival actually starts to become something you need to become considerate of in certain situations. If you’re at a settlement, there are areas where you can recharge your suit, but if you’re out exploring, there’s certainly a risk factor involved. Environmental factors can also have an effect on how hard your suit has to work to keep you alive. If you’re in really extreme temperatures, you’ll be taking physical damage. You can disembark somewhere on the planet with safe temperatures, but you can quite quickly end up somewhere where the temperature is much hotter, and end up in danger.

  1. It’s now a month since the last Dev Diary. What do you think is in the Next one? Is there something you’d like them to cover?

Community Corner

  1. New  expedition “Space Adaptation – The search for Life” expedition,
    1. There is a lot of life in the Universe, from tiny micro-organisms to complex fusion and symbiosis of viable organisms. It is a wonder how all this exists in the universe around us.

To experience these phenomena first hand, the expedition “Space Adaptation – the Search for Life” will visit all manner of life forms out there in the dangerous void relatively close to the Bubble. Join a group of like-minded explorers and admire 11 different alien life forms, including objects created by them, and append these exciting new discoveries to your Codex. The expedition route has been optimized to enable more than 20 codex entries to be collected by visiting only 7 different systems within 15k ly from Sol.

For the enthusiast, there is also a modified route that includes some 20 further systems, containing an extra 20 variations of these life forms.

As a souvenir of your expedition, we aim to take group photographs at each of the phenomena, and collate these into a visual library of the trip.

This expedition presents a unique opportunity for you and your fellow explorers to study, with relative ease and speed, a significant section of life in our universe.

If you wish to join us on our adventure please follow these steps:

Sign up with the expedition on EDSM.
  2. Congratulations to cmdr Thauma, who has managed to circumnavigate the galaxy with his fleet carrier, the FC Nanachi! Full details can be found here on Reddit.

Any Other Business?

  1. According to steam charts, Star Wars Squadrons has now dropped under the Elite Dangerous player level. Now that people are getting used to the multiplayer modes, it seems that turretting (craft can turn quite fast at zero speed) has begun to ruin the multiplayer game.
  2. Star Wars Squadrons gets Mandalorian Updates
  3. Cyberpunk 2077 Delayed by 21 days to the 10th of December https://twitter.com/CyberpunkGame/status/1321128432370176002

Community Corner

  1. Anti-Xeno-Initiative has started a new server called the Initiative. As there has been no real new Thargoid content since the witch head nebula interstellar initiative last year and the fact there still seems to be an issue with the Thargoid Heart bug; they’ve set up a new discord to keep the community together for other other gamers, such as NMS, SW:Squadrons, Star Citizen etc. Hopefully when there is new thargoid content (and maybe a working heart bug-fix), we’ll see a lot of folks returning.
  2. SagI Issue 29 is coming out on Wednesday 7th October
  3. As far as news from the community… TDW is now pending expansion and this is the one that will take us into Lave…

Questions

  1. What Can we do to improve CGs?
    1. Flossy – Have more of them
    2. Paul Wortmeyer Multitask goals that enhance the universe. And or a community goal storyline . Mini story if you will. Aka you need this plant take it to Colonia and convert it to a medical treatment and race it to the station at sag a . Then do it again.
    3. Krisztian Balogh Some type of srv community goal. Would be cool.
    4. Matt Yallop Open only 😂😂
  2. What’s got you excited about Dev Diary 2?

Any Other Business

  1. It can’t be ignored but SW:Squadrons was released last Friday and has taken the Space Sim community by storm. Colin is having real problems with his x52-pro set up as there seems to be a game Hardcoded 20-50% deadzone for that stick, which makes the ships feel like flying through goo, however Ben reports no problems.
    1. How does the combat compare to Elite Dangerous?
    2. How does it compare to CQC?
    3. Anyone up for a Lave Radio squadron?

Tonight’s activity in-game

  1. The Dark Wheel have expanded out of Anyanwu into LTT5455.

Immediately upon that expansion cool down dropping HR 4979 expanded as well as it had been above 75% the whole time. TDW  landed in 5455 and immediately won Our invasion in a sweep 4 to nothing.

The Dark Wheel has a game plan in place to take control of 5455 within a week (with the obvious four day delay for the war) and will look to expand one more time which should take us to our target system to test capital Sol!!! Kai Zen keeps coming back to the fact that there’s only six factions in that Sol and who the hell is supposed to fill the seventh slot if not TDW.

They are currently shaping the 4979 expansion to make sure that it’s in the direction of Lave. IIRC the NEXT jump after this puts us in the neighborhood so to speak.

Development News – what have the devs said this week?

  1. All Interviews were released 18th Aug with Gareth Hughes, Principal Designer of Elite Dangerous: Odyssey: and Jonathan Bottone, Art Director of Elite Dangerous: Odyssey:
  2. Twinfinite Interview https://twinfinite.net/2020/08/elite-dangerous-odyssey-interview/
    1. “Planet ports are ports, as you see in the game already, they are a big sort of draw for a lot of players.

A lot of commerce happens there… trading. This is where you buy your new gear, it’s where you’ll upgrade that gear. It creates a social space where for the first time players will be able to get out on foot and socialize”
      1. Sc𝐵𝑒𝓃: So ON PLANETS We can get out and walk about, interact etc? What about Star Ports?
    2. “Then, on the slightly smaller scale, we have what we call settlements but actually these are quite big. They range from fairly large industrial kind of endeavors, down to military bases, and to small outposts, almost like little villages right on the frontiers of space.

Within those settlements, there will obviously be a human population that you will be able to engage with and do missions for. There’s also additional emergent gameplay that is supported there. If you want to raid these settlements as a pirate you can do that. If you want to take stuff that they need and trade with them you can do that.”
      1. 𝐵𝑒𝓃: Settlements give missions and can be killed??? Reminds me of Raids in WoW where we’d go off and kill all the quest givers 🙂
    3. Survival Features “We have navigation…but you might go too far and the journey back can be really intense! Am I going to make it? Or am I going to suffocate in my suit a hundred meters away? So there are some really cool, intimate, and intense moments that come from the foot gameplay”
      1. 𝐵𝑒𝓃: YAY! So long as you have enough time to do what’s needed and replenishing is easy! I.E. I get back to my ship / Enclosed SRV and my O2 quickly replenish… On the other hand if we get set a speeder bike, maybe it doesn’t? Or maybe the suit has connectors in it and the bike can make O2…
  3. Polygon Interview https://www.polygon.com/2020/8/18/21372562/elite-dangerous-odyssey-expansion-details-one-giant-leap-interview
    1. Developers are also considering allowing them to walk around inside starships, exploring the vessels they’ve owned for years for the first time. The feature won’t be available at launch when Elite Dangerous: Odyssey comes to PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One sometime in early 2021.
    2. Also undecided is how players will transition from ships or wheeled vehicles to walking on foot. The team wants players to have their own “Neil Armstrong moment” Hughes said, of being the first person to step on a distant world. Trouble is that they’re just not settled on what that moment will actually feel like.
    1. Clarification from polygon. They got the bit about animals wrong but the lack of walking around ships they’re standing by.

  1. Odyssey Announcement
    1. Elite Dangerous: Odyssey | Announcement Trailer
    1. Included for LEP Holders
    2. Will not be VR Ready at launch
      1. Is Elite Dangerous: Odyssey coming to VR?
Currently, Elite Dangerous: Odyssey will not be VR-compatible at launch. We’re big fans of VR and we are truly proud of the amazing experience that we currently offer in Elite Dangerous. However, the new gameplay, mechanics and features that will be introduced with Elite Dangerous: Odyssey means that we had to re-examine if we could deliver that same experience without compromise, which, for launch, means Odyssey will not be VR-compatible.
      2. Will there be Base Building in Elite Dangerous: Odyssey?
Base building is not currently on the roadmap for Elite Dangerous, however we have plenty of new features planned instead such as on-foot exploration, new planetary tech, social hubs, combat as well as more to be shared later on! We’re looking to put our best foot forward with Odyssey and if you’d like an overview of what to expect, you can check out the website or Steam page.
      3. Will Elite Dangerous: Odyssey be included in my Lifetime Expansion Pass?
While Elite Dangerous: Odyssey is a paid expansion, we’re happy to confirm that yes, this expansion will absolutely be included in the Lifetime Expansion Pass for free.

Initially The Pilot’s Federation planned on scrapping or parking the Gnosis, but Cannon Interstellar and the Pilots’ Federation have reached a ‘revenue share’ agreement allowing the route will run in perpetuity instead.
