Development News – what have the devs said this week?

  1. January Update – Patch Notes
    1. New BGS States
      1. Factions having trouble with water supplies can now sometimes suffer a Drought, causing an economic downturn. This can be countered by importing water and other emergency supplies.
      2. Infrastructure Failure disrupts a faction’s operations and reduces both security and economic standards. The increased demands on infrastructure elsewhere in the star system may lead to similar failures for other factions. Food and machinery deliveries can speed up repairs.
      3. Terrorism. Terrorists can target prosperous factions, resulting in a significant security and influence cost. This can be countered by legally selling weapons to the authorities and assisting with bounty hunting efforts, or by the faction entering a Lockdown state.
      4. Natural Disasters have a significant economic and security cost for a faction. A natural disaster puts extra strain on the star system’s infrastructure, increasing the chance of drought or infrastructure failure for other factions in that system.
      5. Public Holidays increase a Faction’s influence and standard of living for their duration, however that comes at small economic and security cost.
    1. New FSS Feedback thread – Good and Bad
    2. January Update – Patch 1
      1.  Thank you for your patience while we investigated some of the issues that have arisen during the January Update. We have determined the cause of the stuttering issue that players have experienced upon exiting hyperjump and we will shortly be releasing a patch to fix this. Please see below for when the fix will be released on your platform:

Development News – what have the devs said this week?

  1. 5th Anniversary Announcement

Main discussion

  1. If you were to Re-write Elite, what would you change? Part 2
    1. Michael Hughes – Facebook – Would have kept on top of and taken advantage of the early bugs that allowed people to rank up quickly.
    2. Matt ‘wally’ Walford – Facebook – Do away with engineers, game killer for me as I don’t have the time to grind the upgrades as my work schedule doesn’t allow much game time. its become a game now where despite reaching elite ranking in combat, my ships near useless. – Game is far to unbalanced for casual players
    3. Nopil3os – Twitter – direct economy like in X-BtF and its successors.
    4. Karl – Twitter – I would not rely on the huge amount of 2D interfaces that removes you from first-person view. Since they’re more easy to create, their numbers only grow with each update. Elite is getting very point-and-click heavy.
    5. CMDR Tictak – Twitter – Reduce the repetition and add content instead
    6. Stephen Usher – Facebook – As I talked about during the early Alpha, making the scanner properly linear. Even in the current “linear” mode it’s still actually logarithmic scaling.

This makes true spacial awareness using the scanner impossible and I only use it as a direction finder, unlike in the previous games.
    7. Drew Wagar – Facebook – I would not have allowed the entire galaxy to have been visited, rather I’d have required players to unlock it bit by bit by working out navigable hyperspace routes to new star systems via some kind of gameplay. Biggest mistake they made IMHO.
    8. Swidhelm – Twitter – The ability to set way points on planets, and hud elements for optimal approach and landing. Kind of like the Nostromo landing scene in alien.
    9. EvilSnowball82 – Twitter – Give the DBX a class 5 slot for a fuel scoop. I love my DBX.
    10. David Gillum – Facebook – I would have made the Thargoids more active than passive. As it stands you can choose if you want to encounter a Thargoid, even in infested systems
    11. Michael Hughes – Facebook – Make it possible to map asteroids so you are not always trying to mine the same ones.
    12. Liam Greene – Facebook – The core gameplay “loop”
    13. Make Crime and Punishment much more harsh.
      1. Notoriety is only gained by Killing other players.
      2. High Security Systems should be safe, any player with Notoriety should be harassed by npcs as soon as they enter the system.
      3. Any Player in a civilised system with Notoriety should be visible on the Galaxy Map.
      4. More NPC pirate interdictions in Low Security / Populated Anarchy systems

  • Who is going?
    • As of today, you guys plus 8000 other commanders. 😉
  • Ship builds
  • How long each week
    • About 4500 Ly / 2 hours of travel time for a 40 Ly ship (without stops)
    • The expedition will stop for more than one week near Sag A* for the second CG which will give a good opportunity to catch up if you are behind.
  • Launch times for EU/US/AUS on the 13th/14th
    • 20:00 UTC for Europe (13th Jan)
    • 01:00 UTC for USA (i.e. 5 hours after Europe) (14th Jan)

  • Next Waypoint announcement
    • Either throughout this week via GalNet or 1 hour prior to the EU departure this weekend.
  • Lave Radio coverage
  • Distant Radio
  • Planned attacks on DW2 Expedition
    • Official policy from the DW2 organisers is that we do not endorse any form of PVP within the DW2 PGs, even for protection. Any combat within the DW2 PGs is strictly limited to PVE combat against NPCs. We cannot control anything that happens outside of the DW2 PGs, so we advise that you use the official PGs if you want to avoid PVP combat:
      • FleetComm (PC)
      • DistantworldsXB (Xbox)
      • Allcrowsareblack (PS4)
    • If attacked by a player, please contact a PG Admin privately and directly with any evidence like screenshots, videos, or player logs if on PC, etc. Please do not do this in public in any form.
    • In the event of destruction within one of the PGs, DO NOT click on rebuy. Instead, submit a support ticket with Frontier Support and state in your ticket that you are a DW2 participant and don’t want moving back to the bubble, and wait for a response. If you chose the rebuy option then FDev will be unable to move you back to where you died.
    • In your ticket also cite the information about Harassment Rules in Private Groups, as well as name the player(s) that attacked you.
    • Please do keep in mind that any support handled by FDev is done on a case by case basis at their discretion.
  • Fleet Defence Force and escorts against NPCs
    • Escorts will officially be handled by Iridum Wing on PC and Xbox, and a separate PS4 escort wing. These will be used for escorting truckers and during the mining CGs near civilised space.
    • The Fleet Defence Force is roleplayed with a story entwined in a mystical and interactive adventure that you can join as part of the Distant Worlds 2 expedition. Rumours are circulating of a bandit raider group spread across the route to Beagle Point. The Primary role of the FDF will be to scupper the plans of the bandits based on five interwoven scenarios as part of an EDRPG story arc.
    • The bandit scenarios will be the only sanctioned PvP events taking place within the expedition and will be carried out using SLF’s and SRV’s under strict guidelines in a controlled instance in a separate FDF PG.
    • You will require a ship capable of carrying an SLF.
    • The first Bandit vs FDF scenario will take place on Saturday 26th January 3305, location and times will follow within the FleetComm discord.
  • Fleet Mechanics in-game practice runs from the 8th-12th JAN on all platforms. For more info visit the Fleet Mechanics channel within the FleetComm discord.

Community Corner

  • Distant Worlds reaches more than 8000 Commanders.
  • Anti-Xeno Initiative – The Thargoids attacked Electra placing the system in the Inclusion State. Commanders managed to fend off the Thargoids within 4 days.
  • Operation IDA – They had a Holiday Charity Drive and managed to repair  Asami Orbital, in addition to raising $1100+ for the Direct Aid Charity.
  • Zarek Null Ran the Live Player event of Operation TinMan :- This video presents the final outcome: https://youtu.be/_drbSmJTqe8 –  Because Pilots Federation commanders failed to stop Operation:Tinman, there is now a sentient, artificially intelligent cosmic vampire named CMDR SAI-4 inhabiting open-mode. In order to survive, SAI-4 must continually feed on signals emanated from the exploding frameshift drives of Pilots Federation commanders. So if you see this Commander in Open – RUN!!! He/She/It will Attack!
