About ‘real players’ not needing achievements: the original Elite relied almost exclusively on achievements to keep the player interested. Ranking up towards Elite was nothing particularly hard, it was just long. And yet every so often, you would receive an achievement (a promotion) to make you feel better about something that was in nature mindless grinding.
Maybe we should remember our roots before being so dismissve 🙂
