Development News – what have the devs said this week?

  1. Tuesday – Supercruise News #36
    1. New Approach To Coms – AKA Arf Keeps it real
      1. Community wants to know what is going on with ED’s Development… 
      2. What’s in the future – Short and Long Term Road Map

Questions

  1. Some Feedback on Odyssey from Community Member Temeleen
    1. For me the topography in odyssey is overall better compared to horizons  – if we disregard the obvious bugs in some of the planet generation tech like those LODs I mentioned. I think most of the issues I see in the videos and posts around talking about new tech being pure downgrade revolve around those LODs. As for the topo – we might not see so many extremes like 10km+ deep canyons or 15km tall mountains anymore, but I’d say that was a bit out of proportion in horizon since there wasn’t nearly enough level of detail as we have in odyssey so we don’t really need those extreme less plausible formations (all this if we consider ultra for capture setting being the “golden” standard in odyssey).

      In odyssey some of the mountains in those screenshots are some 7km tall still so I don’t think everything is just flat as some streamers mention plus there’s whole another level of detail when it comes to terrains themselves and their surface materials, lots of variable formations due to height maps blending… the hills/mountain and canyons can get far more complex than they used to be with planets looking quite unique given the circumstances.

      So yeah for me overall great improvement potentially If fdev figures out the bugs in the generation so ppl using regular ultra or lower settings wont see those ugly leopard patches or disappearing hills when they approach the surface. The new tech actually made me go out and explo for the view, something I never had as a main reason before.

  1. Lavecon Covid Update:
    We are currently assuming the event will go ahead and planning for that.

    However that relies on the covid restrictions being lifted in line with the government timeline.

    If the government announces that will not be the case and the proposed date is after the event, then the event will not go ahead. We don’t think it is practical for the event to take place with the current social distancing requirements in place. 

    If this is the case we will offer full refunds or the option to roll your tickets over to next year. We would also put in place a virtual event similar to last years

    If the event is able to go ahead and has no mandatory covid requirements in place, we will be asking for attendees to voluntarily take sensible precautions. This includes taking the free lateral flow covid test before attending, wearing a face covering, hand washing and, where possible, giving each other space. 
    We will update you as soon as we have a definite way forward.

  1. Distant Worlds 3 expedition is postponed indefinitely (from DW Project Leader Erimus)
    1. Erimus Kamzel: “The game has lost its soul.  Not only have they monumentally botched a two-year in-development release, they also seem to have severed ties with their own lore and history.  Check out Drew Wagar’s post in the Odyssey discussion forum, he nailed it.

      Turning the Wheel is likely to be the last of the great community initiatives.  Ones like Distant Worlds 3 are highly unlikely to occur now too, we’ve postponed it indefinitely.

      There really needs to be a big change in the way Frontier treats its players.  At this moment in time they don’t deserve this fantastic creative community, and if they don’t reembrace it or stop disrespecting it, they’ll lose it for good.”

Please know that I’ve not seen a single thing that verifies these percentages are correct, and as an Xbox player since the inception of Xbox, it doesn’t surprise me in the least that they’d be very inaccurate. So questioning the accuracy of said percentages of “people who’ve completed” ‘such-and-such’ in any game is a very reasonable and rightful thing to do.     2. Learned that Orange Pheonix, who has helped the community so much with his work in SPVFA and Sagittarius Eye, only has access to a 2nd hand ‘Gaming Laptop’ with a GTX 660 in it. Due to his real life situation he’s not in a position to replace it so that he can run Odyssey and, against his initial protests, have created Operation Warbucks to help him get a PC so that he can join us all in Odyssey. They feel that a man of his artistic talents would be sorely missed in Odyssey so we want to help him join us there. Our target is £1600 If we achieve this target – anything above will be donated to Health in Mind Scotland.

      The stream will begin on Saturday 15th May @ 17:00 UTC and run for 24 hours with each streamer doing a 3-4 hour show. There will be giveaways and fun events on each stream so anyone can get involved!!

Questions

During Episode 336 we discussed the idea of a new rank grind where Shan was incredibly against the idea, but Ben was more “meh” about the whole thing, so we thought we’d get your opinion, do you want:

  1. Ranks above Elite (i.e. Elite+ or Archangel)
  2. The existing ranks to be spread out more? (i.e. Very Deadly etc)
  3. A prestige mechanic
  4. Recognition for a greater variety of game achievements (i.e. Mining, AX, Passenger, etc)
  5. No changes to the current ranks
  6. Change what you like about Trade and Exploration Ranks, but leave Combat alone
  7. A new “Post Elite Rank” grind (i.e. The Banking Consortium has noticed your trade rank and we’d like you do do some jobs for us, etc)
